Travel time tracking for field engineers
Muster records the hours you spend getting to a job as Travel, and claims them at the rate your agreement gives travel: in the week, or apart at a weekend rate.
Travel is time, not a note on the day
On most timesheets the drive or the flight is a line in the comments, and the hours are argued about later. In Muster travel is an activity like Labour. You clock in on it, the timer runs, and the hours go into the week with a column of their own when your agreement gives them one.
- Clock in on Travel. On the clock-in form, choose Travel under Doing what. Onsite switches off, because travelling is not being on site. See Clocking in.
- A long day of it. A Travel timer runs 36 hours before it turns amber as possibly left running, so a day of flights is not taken for a forgotten clock.
- Through midnight. A journey that runs through midnight is split between its two days, and each day's hours are paid at that day's rate. See A journey through midnight is two days' work.
- Entered afterwards. Choosing Travel on the entry form opens a Journey block in the same form, so one save writes the hours and where you went. See Travel entries and the journey block.
Paid as your agreement pays it
Three settings in Settings › How I'm paid say what travel is worth. Out of the box, travel counts toward the 39-hour week like work, and every Sunday hour is at the Sunday rate.
- Travel counts toward the week. On, travel pushes you toward the threshold. Off, it leaves the week and is claimed apart, at plain rate.
- Saturday travel. Given a column, every Saturday travel hour is claimed in it whatever the week, and kept out of the 39, so no hour is paid twice.
- Sunday travel. Every Sunday hour is at the Sunday rate unless this names another column for travel.
The rules are in Weekend travel.
A worked example
A week of 33 hours on site, Monday to Friday, and 6 hours driving home on the Saturday.
| Your agreement says | What the 6 Saturday hours claim |
|---|---|
| Saturday is an ordinary day (as shipped) | The week makes 39, so nothing over: 6 hours at basic |
| Saturday travel at time and a half | 6 hours at x1.5, whatever the week |
Drive home on the Sunday instead and, as shipped, all 6 hours are at the Sunday rate, x2.0. Sunday hours never push the weekday hours into overtime.
The journey, as well as the hours
With Journeys and mileage switched on, a drive in your own car or van goes into your mileage log, and can be measured by road once you have said yes. Flights, trains, taxis and ferries are never measured by road. With Travel and Schengen on, landing closes the stay you left and opens one where you arrived. See A travel day.
What it does not do
Muster does not decide whether your travel is paid at all: that is your contract. It claims travel as the settings say, and only the hours you record as Travel are travel.
